What is the custom for using a ring wrap with solitare for a wedding set?

My fiance bought me marquise shaped diamond solitare ring for our engagement. How does this work exactly? The two rings have been bought separately, so jeweler must size the wrap to match the engagement ring and he must set the stones in the wrap. I know it is customary (and more secure and less wearing) for the rings to be soldered together, but how do we get by before the wedding day? Do we solder them together as close to the wedding day as possible - then I don't wear them until they get put on my finger on the ceremony day?

Usually you would have them soldered after the wedding day. However, my stepdaughter had hers done right before the wedding - and her fiance got a big cubic zirconium solitaire for her to wear instead of her engagement ring for the last couple weeks before the wedding (or maybe it was a loaner from the jewelry store?).
